NISOMAR Group Announces the Passing of CEO and Founding Partner, Joseph Weloba
It is with deep sadness that NISOMAR Group shares the news of the passing of our CEO and founding partner, Joseph Weloba.
Joseph was instrumental in establishing NISOMAR’s purpose and direction, helping to shape the company into what it is today. His vision, dedication, and leadership were central to our journey, and he leaves behind a strong and resilient organization that reflects the values he stood for.
Throughout his time with NISOMAR, Joseph inspired all those around him—with his insight, integrity, and unwavering commitment to excellence. His influence extended beyond the business, touching the lives of colleagues, partners, and clients with warmth, wisdom, and professionalism.
As we come to terms with this loss, we also recognize the importance of continuing the work that Joseph so passionately believed in. The leadership team, supported by dedicated colleagues across the Group, remains committed to delivering on our strategic priorities and serving our clients with the same focus and integrity that Joseph championed.
We extend our deepest sympathies to Joseph’s family, friends, and all who knew him. He will be remembered with great respect and affection.
May he rest in peace.

On the Ground with Charles Iregi working for Nisomar Group as a P&I technical surveyor in Mombasa.
A conversation with Charles Iregi, P&I Surveyor at Sea Pearl Marine x Nisomar Group.
1. What does your role as a P&I surveyor in Mombasa typically involve?
No two days are the same. One day I’m attending a grounding or a cargo contamination claim; the next I could be conducting a pre-loading inspection or liaising with port authorities. My role is to be the eyes and ears of the P&I clubs or underwriters on the ground — ensuring fast, accurate, cost-effective and impartial reporting to protect our clients’ interests.
2. What types of claims do you see most often, and how do you handle them?
We frequently deal with cargo damage, crew injury, contamination, vessel collisions and various engine room issues. Each case requires a tailored approach, but the aim is always the same: rapid mobilization, thorough assessment, and concise reporting to facilitate timely, cost-effective outcomes for the club and its members.
3. What makes working in Mombasa unique for a P&I surveyor?
Mombasa is East Africa’s maritime gateway — busy, diverse, and strategically important. The region comes with its own set of challenges: limited infrastructure in remote areas, cross-border issues, and weather unpredictability. But there are real opportunities too, especially as trade routes expand and port operations modernize.
4. How does Sea Pearl Marine x Nisomar Group maintain high standards in P&I survey work?
We operate on a foundation of integrity, responsiveness, and transparency. Our reports are fact-based, timely, and structured to meet international standards. Whether it’s a routine inspection or a complex incident, our clients know they can rely on us for clear, professional communication at every stage.
5. Can you share a moment when your intervention helped avoid a major dispute?
Recently, I was called to assess alleged key damage that could have led to a substantial claim. Our swift inspection revealed the problem and on quick and critical in-depth assistance, we were able to reduce the claim by a significant 30%.
6. Why should P&I clubs trust your team in Mombasa?
We’re local, experienced, and deeply connected — but we operate to the highest ethical and professional standards. Our response time is fast, our reporting is trusted, cost-effective and our track record speaks for itself. For any P&I club operating along the East African coast, we are a reliable extension of your team.
Sea Pearl Marine are an affiliated company to the Nisomar Group of companies, providing high quality technical assistance for the maritime world in East Africa.
